Information About Firearms?

Recommended Posts

Liamscottcurran1546621370

I want to join the police but don't know if I would like being in a firearms squad. Wouldn't like to shoot anyone in all my life.

I'm reading a book on Forensic and Criminal Investigation by Monckton-Smith, Adams, Hart and Webb, but the firearms section is one brief paragraph!

Are there any books about firearms or any good crime investigation books that talk in depth about firearms or any documentaries that provide information that any officers would recommend?

Thank you!

- Liam S.

You don't have to carry a firearm to be a police officer.

 Don't join the firearms section then  bit like saying you have a fear of dogs so wouldn't fancy being a dog handler - utter crazy  very strange post in my opinion!!

I don't think it's strange at all, and it's not like saying I have a fear of dogs because I don't have a fear of guns, I just wouldn't LIKE to shoot anyone in the same way I wouldn't LIKE to see a dog maul someone. Not saying dogs maul people, which is how you see the comparison doesn't work! I'd be worried if there was a firearms officer that WOULD like to shoot someone. But they understand that sometimes lethal force must be used.

If you can answer my actual question though with recommendations of books about firearms that would be good! Thanks.

Thanks, I understand this, hence the word squad. I'm just trying to figure out what I want to do in life. Become a CSI or CID or whatever, I would just like to read something or find a good informative documentary or something.

Reasonable Man

Join up and in the first two years you will start to find out what you are good at and enjoy. Then spend another few years honing your skills in that direction and, if you are lucky, you may be able to specialise in that area.

Many people join thinking they would like to one thing but end up in a completely different area of work.

There is no benefit in thinking about specialist roles before your have even joined.

I'm sorry Liam but to me I don't think you are police material. The way you word your posts indicates to me that you are pedantic and confrontational....not good indications in my view.

I may be wrong (rarely am) but will apologise in 2 or 3 years if/when you make pc.

My comparison above was relevant'ish. i.e. don't like dogs - don't be a dog handler. Couldn't kill someone - don't work in firearms, you may have to fire a fatal shot!!

I'm sorry but if you are then I'd be worried because you're not reading what I'm saying, I think you're interpreting what I'm saying incorrectly, and I can't word it any differently. I'd think that being a bit pedantic would be a good thing, because what I think I'm saying and what you think I'm saying are different, I'm disagreeing with your interpretation. You wouldn't put that much interpretation (if any) on a witness statement.

I COULD do it, I wouldn't LIKE to fatally shoot someone, that's why firearms squads are a last resort in most situations. I literally used the phrase 'wouldn't LIKE to shoot anyone in all my life'. I LIKE guns, I find them interesting, the mechanics, the use in wars over centuries. If I was scared of them I wouldn't use them. If I was scared of dogs, I wouldn't handle them. That's the only way your position makes sense. Except I'm not saying I dislike guns. It was a passing comment anyway, just to give my post context.

There's not a cat in hell's chance you can tell if I am police material from a forum post.

If you would like to suggest some materials for me to use that would be great, if not, that suggests to me that you're the one being confrontational. You're a police officer, for who I have the utmost respect but I'm not visiting you after witnessing a crime or some other official police matter so being a pedant isn't that bad really!

Wouldn't like to shoot somebody but would?? That hesitancy could be the vital second that a colleague or member of the public could be shot/injured. That is what I meant.

 I wouldn't put any interpretation on any witness statement because I'm a lorry driver with a great interest in our boys in blue, I applied and almost got accepted then had a motorbike accident  no way could pass the fitness test at the time.

Things moved on and I found a different vocation (before driving a lorry - not important or relevant)

I am not a confrontational type of person more objectionable! I was merely passing a comment that hesitancy could be a major/fatal flaw by your dictation.

I could maybe have re-applied and ending up joining because the sport I was involved got me back to 100% fitness but at the time I was earning more than a constable so kept with it ;) will never know if I made the right decision :drinking:

You can figure out a lot by the way people put words on a forum. Attitude, manners, foresight, and even in some cases aptitude.

I have read back at your posts and I maybe have misjudged, slightly. But the hesitancy is the one that got me.

Fair enough, I'm just trying to say I wouldn't enjoy it is what I'm getting at. I know these things have to be done.

I guess you can, even then, can never be too sure the way a person conducts themselves on a forum is the same as real life :p

Good luck in finding the answer to your question!

I think you've got the right attitude Liam, you're interested in joining the Police and want more information on a particularly challenging part of Policing, and then get slated by a Lorry driver and and Mr Happy. You are quite right in saying you wouldn't like to shoot someone, and anyone saying they could wouldn't get within a mile of a gun within Policing. As for more material on Policing I can only suggest reading ACAB by a guy I know Iain Reid an ex Scots guards and Kent Plod.

I think your best bet is to arrange a meeting with an officer who had actually experience in the field. I personally don't feel that you will get a true answer from reading material or from someone on a forum (look how that worked out)

Can't see an issue with asking your local force for a meet seeing as it's for a potential career!

Plus you have probably seen the news and information going around that there are many officers in the job that are reluctant to join firearms for the very reason you have stated! Maybe a good idea to arrange a meeting with an armed and unarmed officer?

Get both opinions from serving officers in a very challenging environment.......maybe.....just to through a constructive opinion out there ;-)

Sorry but I don't think I slated him I merely responded with my initial thoughts. It was just my opinion at the time and I stated later I may be wrong.

I wish him all the best and as this is a forum I contributed to it. If no one contributed it would be a message board and boring. Different opinions on most things may raise further questions, doubt or may even confirm someone is/was right in the first place.

Just my thought

I would say that's pretty much a slating of his character as after one post you call him pedantic and confrontational, which is extremely harsh considering you're not even a Police officer in the first place to make a comment.

I may be wrong (rarely am) is what you said, hardly an apology.
