Question for Argonath

Hello

I have a few questions about the MOD Police and I see that you are a serving Officer rather than a trainee, so I hoped you'd be able to answer them for me.

Here goes ;

1. I know that after training you're likely to spend your probation at Aldermaston, but I wondered what happens after that. Do you get to choose where you want to go or are you simply posted somewhere ?

2. Can you stay in a particular geographical area or are you expected to move around ?

3. Realistically what are the opportunities for specialisation ? Is it dead mans shoes/face fits, like the HO forces or can you realistically expect to get a post like dog handler etc without having to get 15 years in the job first ?

I did 6 years in a HO force then jacked it in to be a househusband. Now the kids are of school age I want to get back to work but I don't want to go back into a HO force. The MOD Police ticks all the boxes for me but my wife isn't keen on being dragged around the country and the kids continually having to move school. Thats my only sticking point. I know there must be others like me, I just wonder how they cope ?

Hi. I know you asked the question to someone else but hopefully you won't mind me butting in :whistle2:

You have to apply for any postings once out of your time at your initial station rather than them just moving you. I'll warn you now that division are enforcing a 3 year tenure period rather than the 2 that everyone believes so don't expect anything for at least 3 years**.
2. Can you stay in a particular geographical area or are you expected to move around ?
You can stay where you want, if you wish you can stay at your initial station until you (a) retire/resign or (b) the station closes. If the station closes you have some choice in where you go but obviously it will depend on a large number of factors. If AWE (A or B) closes we're all f**ked :thumbsup:
3. Realistically what are the opportunities for specialisation ? Is it dead mans shoes/face fits, like the HO forces or can you realistically expect to get a post like dog handler etc without having to get 15 years in the job first ?
Very likely. Obviously some specialisations have longer timescales depending on the demand, vacancies and location, but it is reasonably easy to get into specialisations within the force.

Fortunately we get fairly good blocks of rest days so if you don't mind lodging down there during your shifts you can get 4/5 days at home at a time [it gets very tiresome after a few years believe me]. However, there are people who commute large miles every day, personally don't know how they do it.

**Firstly you must be aware that RECRUITMENT IS CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR MDP, keep an eye on the forums here for any updates on that front, rumour has it up to 5 years. Secondly, the force has heavily restricted the transfers within the force areas. If you are hoping for a station closer to Shrops you are likely to be waiting for a long, long time, and that is assuming that the stations are still open in 3/5/7/+ years time. Thirdly. have a search around the boards, youll be surprised how many times this subject has been covered and as such there is a lot of information on here.

Basically, what I am trying to say is: When MDP recruitment does eventually reopen, and should you be successful in getting in, then expect to be posted to either of the AWE stations (they are both located very near to each other in West Berkshire) for at least your first 3 years, so don't expect to be able to get transferred to a station closer to home until a time after that if at all. You won't receive any assistance in relocating down to the West Berks area from the force and will have to find your own accomodation, although your initial training at Wethersfield Essex is residential and food is provided. The work is very different to Home Office policing and being totally honest with you leaves a lot of people at AWE very unsatisfied, so if you're looking for the excitement of the job you once had at HO you'll be wishing you went back to the HO in the first place.

Hopefully that helps a little.

Many thanks for the detailed reply TLR. Something to mull over :g:
