How do you access training?

Primarily aimed at serving Specials, I am looking to see across the board how you get access to training. Be it routine training seminars or more advanced courses. Also, how do you access existing training documents? I'd also like to hear how effective you believe it is and what improvements you'd like to see.

I ask as I'm looking to put suggestions in too but could do with supporting it with some evidence. It would be nice to hear what scope of training you receive as well.

For us:

We typically receive one or two local training sessions (a couple of hours) per month. These are often held at the largest station in the area or at headquarters. Each area will do something similar, although the actual training being given may vary. Typically it is refreshers on topics such as assaults, Public Order Act, drugs, etc.

"Specialist" training packages are less frequent and typically depend on the availability of trainers and are sometimes put on to correspond with big events. For example, PIP-1 training was run for a few weekends. Search training is typically put on once a year as we have a festival nearby. Driver training is a bit as-and-when, especially as we are low on driving instructors and have had a lot of Regs join recently who need the response stuff before us.

There appear to be no provisions for Method of Entry training or PSU at the moment.

Training is provided via DutySheet and is allocated by Specials Supervision - So individual officers may not attempt to jump the gun and get on their own training courses.

One issue I have noticed is that training documents tend to vanish - If you miss a training, there is typically no easy way to access the information. So if an input on drugs comes around once or twice a year, it's very easy to miss out on the information for a long time unless you can find someone who has the slides. As far as I know, there isn't a central database for all the training packages.

How is it where you are?

Cheers

Hi!

At Kent we have two forms if we are talking about ongoing training after attesting. The first being a monthly training event to which all Specials are required to attend. Usually this covers some of the basic stuff and is also a chance for non IP officers to get their NOSes caught up on.

Secondly, we have NCALT based packages that can accessed from home and the station.

It really varies on the specific training courses. My basic driving for example was more thrown at me once I became independent, whereas special training you usually have to request at Kent and sometimes you may be on a long waiting list!

That depends to an extent on where you are in your service, current skill set and operational need.

On Tac Ops we dont have monthly training, but have periodic training tailored to your given area of expertise. Of course we use NCALT for the forcewide material.

Also there are group operations where our newer colleagues can work en mass with the specialist teams, other Specials and get broader exposure to different roles.

We also take out newer colleagues on attatchment to gain traffic experience and get their NOS's signed off.

Training is varied in Kent and its fair to say ever improving in depth and breadth.

In Notts we have Monthly divisional training, some recapping old learnings, some new. Also got access to good old NCALT. Once IPS we have the option to do some shifts with the specialist teams, traffic, land sharks etc...
