Roof repair

Does anyone know what I can use as a temporary fix for a small hole in my roof? (no more than an inch). I got a quote from a roofing company and they want £500 to do the job and I just don't have £500 at the moment and it does seem quite a lot for such a small hole (they have described what they'll do)

I can get to the hole from inside the loft, I'm just looking for some waterproof stuff I can put in the hole that will last a few months (or at least until the torrential rain stops)

Thanks

We have lived in our house for 12 years now, and a few months ago the roof started to leak. So we called someone we know who repairs them much cheaper than a roofing company.

Whilst he was up there he started lobbing down whacking great lumps of kitchen and bathroom sealer that had been used to bodge the roof up.

It lasted nearly 12 years though!

We had a whole in our bathroom which was causing the entire wall to go damp, we filled it with a sylicone based sealer and we have had no problems since!

The type of repair needed will also depend on the type of roof, slate, tiles, flat and even the type of repair that would best serve.

I think if you covered it with some of that lead cladding / sheet stuff that may help keep out some of the water on a temporart basis. Lots of companys will also give you free quotes so it pays to shop around.

A lot depends on how big the hole is and the material that’s broken or on the outside of the roof as well…tiles or slate on an apex roof or a flat roof.

Because whilst you could get a piece of plywood of decent thickness, maybe 18mm or 25mm (3/4†or 1†in old money) and treat the weather facing side with a healthy dollop of bitumen paint…the weather facing side will be at odds with the profile of the current roof, so it will stop water getting into the hole but could run off and under the good tiles.

If you do look at something like that then get the ply the width of your rafters, so you can attach a couple of noggins of wood on the inside facing side…as these will allow you to drive home some screws into the rafters and mount it up against the hole.

Depending on the size of the hole, and to avoid it displacing the water elsewhere as mentioned above, you could mount a make shift wooden slate on the weather facing side…so that when in situ it matches the finished tile height.

Failing that, make the hole bigger and fit a Velux window.

Although, and joking aside, you used to be able to get small glass skylight openings with lead flashings for roofs…whether or not they can be retrofitted and simply occupy a tile space?

Cheers peopke, it looks as if a bit of lead has moved and left about an inch gap. I've put some brick sealant in the gap for now, and looking to borrow a roof ladder from a Neighbour
