Can I join with Scheuermann's disease?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I have been officially diagnossed with Scheurmann's disease/scheurmann's kyphosis. I can get in quite a lot of pain in the back and the legs, especially after running (although I am more than fit enough to pass the BLEEP test, it is not an issue of me being overweight).

Would this stop me from taking on a frontline role? I have been told by the doctor I most likely wouldn't be able to join the army, so I wondered if the same could be for police as it is quite a physical job.

Thanks

Ask your doctor. Ask the recruitment team. We can’t say because we aren’t medical professionals.

What will likely happen is that you will need a decision to be made on your medical instead of automatically “passing”. I had to have my skin condition screened by the Occ Health doctor.

Would you be in pain after the bleep test? There are many other things to consider regarding the role of a cop. You may have to physically exert yourself (over and above the bleep test) many times throughout a shift. There can be prolonged period of time in a seated position. What stress would a stab vest or belt kit put on your back?

I never want to put off anyone from joining but you have to be honest with yourself as well. There are many civilian roles within the police at present. You may want to consider one of those as well.

About us

Police Community was originally founded in 2014 by two serving Police Officers.

In 2016 it was incorporated as a limited company called RAW Digital Media Limited and then purchased 3 other forums; Police Specials, UK Police Online and Police UK to form the largest policing discussion forum network in the UK. In 2019 the decision was taken to merge all four forums into this main form of www.police.community
