Boots

Recommended Posts

I'm joining TVP as a special and they have told me that I need to purchase my own boots. They have given me a boot allowance, but I'm unsure of what boots are comfortable. What do you guys recommend?

Hi Jess,

you're going to get any number of recommendations regarding boots.  Everybody will have their own opinion.

I wear Altbergs, but only because they're issued, although I know a few colleagues who have to buy their own and they buy Altbergs too.  Before I had them issued, I'd bought Magnums and 5.11 boots - I also tried Oakleys and Adidas GSG9 boots.  I did like the 5.11s..........my current Altbergs aren't the 'grippiest' in the wet, but they pretty good for 'free'.

The usual suspects are going to be listed, Magnums, 5.11, SWAT, et al...........

All I'd say is find somewhere that sells a few makes and try them out - I'd say it's worth spending the extra getting waterproof materials, and I'd buy a higher boot to give your ankle more protection, but it'll depend on what you find comfortable - you're going to be in them for a few hours in all manner of weathers, so comfortable is pretty important.........

I'd also buy decent socks - again, everybody will have their own opinions on which socks are best - I only wear 5.11 socks because they seem to look after my feet no matter what the temperature - but I'm sure there are many manufacturers whose socks would do the same, cheaper - I've just found the socks that suit me. ;)

Most boots appear to have a Vibram sole, but any 'duty/tactical' boot is going to have a good sole, as they know that we spend all day in them.......

I'd probably budget somewhere in the £100 area, but that comes down to how much disposable income you've got.  Pretty much any pair of boots in that ballpark is going to be good.  Have 'fun' choosing!

Thank you, I've been doing some reading through other posts and forums and it sounds like Magnums come quite highly recommended. I've also found a pair of Dr Martens (I'm a huge fan of Doc Martens anyway), anyone ever used these on patrol?

I would also recommend Altbergs, if you ring them, they give a discount when you give your force and collar number and post out very quickly. Best boots I ever had, the ladies sneaker elite are light and strong.

I don't wear boots for work anymore, but I have seen inside the Altberg factory and can say they are extremely well made. I have a pair of Altberg motorcycle boots which are now 14 years old and apart from showing signs of use/abuse over the years they are still first class and very VERY comfortable. Whats more they can be repaired by a competant cobbler. Altberg used to repair as well but their busines increased so much they have had to discontinue that service.

They have an informative website, have a look

I really wouldn't use Doc Martens..........don't think I've seen a copper wearing them in years and years............not in my force anyway.......

I would recommend a pair of Aku Pilgrims, very comfy, don't need breaking in.
