bikerider 5
If Pen were here there would be a quick and simple answer... however.!.... T'other half has gone and bought herself a new laptop from a well known high street chain which I think has slightly less integrity than an MP or the Daily Mail. On the face of it a good deal with a few add-ons included. They asked her about anti virus software and not being sure she called me and told me they wanted to sell her Norton Anti Virus . My response was don't touch it with a barge pole, and told her better Anti Virus software was available free on the internet - AVG! This would be backed up by Pen! Anyway to cut a long story, they persuaded her that Norton was the system to go for because AVG has 'issues' (unexplained) when installed with Windows version 8 and was prone to making the computer run slow. The price they charged for Norton was nearly double that of the purchase price for the full version of AVG, so I feel she was ripped off just a bit. Has anyone else bought a computer with Windows 8 and installed AVG software and were there any 'issues'? I feel a call to Trading Standards may follow. 999tommo 1,297
Not sure about AVG, but my dad has a Windows 8 PC and uses Avast Free. No issues that I'm aware of. Pen will always recommend AVG (paid rather than free), but he is an authorised re-seller, so has a personal interest.
Picard999 855
I can tell you that Norton is a system-hogging nightmare. And good luck trying to completely remove it... I'd buy anything other than that...
Bouncer 446
Sounds like the salesman was after some extra commission. As most people are aware of the paid for extended warranty scam, they have to try and get money out of you by other means. You should have the choice of what software you put on your computer, and false statements like the salesman used need stamping on. Get on to TS and complain.
Techie1 + 2,024
Windows 8 has defender (formerly MSE) built in. Ditch the dodgy AV and just use that. (Or maybe avast or AVG if you don't want the default microsoft AV).
M&MBM 598
My hubby is a computer engineer. We have used Norton for years with no problems. The important thing with any antivirus software is to keep it up to date.
croberon 523
Here are some links: Click and Click. It looks like the problem has either been solved or there is a workaround. I think she was ripped off, not because I'm a paid AVG user, but because you can usually buy PCs with a 30-days trial of an anti-virus with an option to buy during or at the end of the 30 days. I think the salesman wanted the commission. We don't use Windows 8 at work but do have AVG installed enterprise-wide and it has eliminated our previous problem with viruses. bikerider 5
Unfortunately, money has changed hands but we have talked about it and she will give it a month and if it isn't up to speed then I will uninstall it and install a full version of AVG. Fortunately she isn't one for doing a lot of work on-line so the risk may be negligible, mainly E mails to her family and a bit of holiday research (where to go). I'm assuming the version of Norton she has bought has a limited life licence so when that expires it's as much toast. I am still going to speak to our local trading standards about possible miss selling though. Has anyone a contact E mail or 'phone number for AVG so I can ask them about the 'alleged' problem?

bikerider 5
That was VERY helpful Croby. I spoke to someone from the company and they have absolutely no compatibility issues with AVG and Windows 8 so the dealership was telling very large fibs! This will not stop here!
