Vista not only takes up a heap of memory on my laptop but it also slows the processor a bit AND is blocking me from using my Sony HDD camcorder with windows movie maker..... If I can afford it I think it will definately be worth it! Misery Guts2009-10-24 20:07:26

Well I went and did it a couple of months ago. I upgraded (?) to W7. It seems OK. Not had any major glitches yet (touch wood)

Slightly off topic (but as I started it, I don't care) but Google Chrome is now a lot, lot better. They've finally come up with extensions and plug-ins to improve the functionality. The best one being Adblock and Adblock +. These are available on Firefox and were the main reason for me keeping Chrome in reserve.

Anyone else using Chrome? It does create a few issues with forum codes and hyperlinks on this site.

Long time since I scrolled this far down.

I bought the Aldi "All-in-one" touch PC in mid November.  Windows 7 is lovely, so far.  No problems moving over from XP.  Haven't yet sorted the networking since I like netbeui for the internal network and that is not yet available for win 7.  Need some thought before I change to TCP/IP to ensure I am properly firewalled  from the web.

Win 7 has its own network setup with "Homegroup" which only works with win 7 PCs.  To network with my XP and 98 machines I will have to use the standard setup and keep away from homegroup.

The touch screen is good.  After simple calibration it is accurate.  Reports indicate that it is much improved over Vista.  Can't think of a regular use for it though, bit of a gimmick

Windows media centre is also very good (version 12 I believe)  My machine has TV so use the media centre to watch and record.  The management wanted Cranford recorded.  Recorded to hard disk and then transferred to DVD.  The native format is .wtv but media centre converted to DVD video and shrunk the recording to fit on a single layer.  Took a long time but just did it.  When I tried the same with part 2 the transfer to DVD failed at 7% three times.  Fortunately it does the conversion to the hard disk and then writes to DVD so I didn't waste any disks.  Decided to try making another DVD of part 1.  The machine locked up three times, at different places each time.  When I stopped watching and let the screensaver take over it produced the DVD without any problem.

Must investigate that and possibly e-mail Medion.

Don't like windows live messenger popping up each time I boot up but that is probably only finding a way to switch it off.

Conclusion is that Windows 7 is OK, probably better than XP and, from reports, much better than Vista.  My machine has lots of gadgets, which appear to be standard in windows 7 - clock, calender CPU meter, news feed, weather link and more.  Useful with a wide screen.  I won't spend money to change my old machines but won't buy anything new unless it has windows 7.  Not using the new machine regularly yet until I get the networking sorted.

We've got it on our replacement laptop. Looks good and boots up faster. Our old one had Vista which was slow from day one.

With Windows 8 coming up, I am just excited to see what further improvements are going to be made available. It has been quite a while since they came up with an operating system and true enough, this should be just ripe for the picking.

And personally, I hope that this would be the time when most corporations would take the upgrade from XP to something more current and newer.

Well, they will have to replace XP soon. Microsoft are going to stop supporting it. I can't remember the date for certain but I think it is next year.

As for Windows 8, I have yet to try it myself but, from the reviews I have read, it seems like the main change is to cater for touch screen computers. In particular they seem keen to have an operating system for their new pad.

I must get around to upgrading my computer from Vista to 7...

Shocking, I'm supposed to be a techie, but still using Vista! Then again, I don't want to dish out the money to upgrade it...

Doubt I'll go to 8 just yet, based on the touchscreen aspect - which I don't really need in a desktop, and I have an iPad for casual browsing.

I do use 7 on other computers and do prefer it greatly to XP and especially Vista.
