We hope this section will develop into a 'Virtual Classroom' and 'Virtual Support Group' for all those studying for the Scottish Police Promotion Exams.

The Police Oracle team have been through police promotion processes and know how much difference it can make to have advice and support from peers.

Good luck in your studies!

Just for your info, the Scottish Police Promotion Exams are being replaced completely in 2009 by the Diploma in Police  Leadership and Management - once the legislation has been changed (something the bright sparks who thought up the DPLM hadn't taken into account - doh!)

http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2007/08/28175107/2

Help with studying for the DPLM can be found at

http://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/33577.html

and in particular the "Candidate Support Pack" link which takes you to study notes for 5 of the 8 modules you have to complete.

Whereas the Police Promotion Exams were open to ALL police officers, there are only limited number of places on the DPLM courses which are staggered throughout the year, so the likelihood is that you will first have to go through a selection process in your own force to be deemed 'suitable' to take the DPLM .

Thank you very much for the post. Most interesting. I shall have to do some research.

Phil,

I would be interested to know whether "transformational leadership, emotional intelligence and change agent skills" play any part in the OSPRE syllabus.

As far as I can tell 'emotional intelligence' is something that ACPOS have adopted from the United States.

Apparently the Scottish Police College are giving recruits lessons on this rather than more essential (in my opinion) practical skills like how to take a statement.

I am familiar with Transformational Leadership and Change Management skills, but not emotional intelligence, and I am now going to find out about it. I think any sort of Leadership training is essential in the modern Police Service. When I got promoted sergeant we had a man come in to the Training School to teach us Leadership with the aid of Lego bricks.  You can imagine how well that went down.

Change Management is essential too because the service is constantly evolving, and it is important to manage that process.   I assume the basic skills needed to be a Sergeant are also covered?
