Pigman 327 Posted September 7, 2008 Share Posted September 7, 2008 Most of us will remain at a Pc for our whole careers , a few will become sgts and even less as more senior ranks. As far as i am concerned the better Sergeants are the ones with experience and the ones that have been in that rank for a number of years. Is that Your view? If so why does the pay structure push all PC's away from promotion? If you know what i mean...when you want something else or more money At 2 years you are out of your probation At 3/4 years you have made your mind up what you want to do...CID Dogs ARV Traffic other specialist role At 5/6 years you get your job At 9/10 years you really enjoy your job but want more money 10 yrs You are now on max PC pay next year you get your threshold payment. To get promoted now you would recieve no pay rise going onto 1st year SGT ! To the outside world if i explain this they are amazed.... So what incentive to study, do exam,part two,promotion board etc? When will they pay SGTs more to encourage us with more than 10years to go for promotion? How many of you know of PC/DC with 10yrs plus who would make good sgts...how many don't want it because of all the hassle etc We only do this job for the money they give us....don't we? We do not want to have 3year service sgts do we? Pc's and Sgts are the workers and we need to encourage the best to remain in the doing jobs and not moving onto management jobs. This will never happen with the current pay structure. It needs to change...Do you agree? The present system only encourages young in service officers to get promoted and this is wrong.....Do you agree? Penbwlch 810 Posted September 7, 2008 Share Posted September 7, 2008 When I was promoted to Inspector (1985), I was on top rate for PS (I had 10 years as PS) and went straight onto year 2 Inspector rate. Pigman 327 Posted September 8, 2008 Author Share Posted September 8, 2008 Yes it is still the case.....As a 10 year Pc you get the same as a first year Sergeant......With the Threshold payment it takes a Pc to about same 2nd year sergeant.....Get promoted to Sgt after 11+ years and you lose the threshold payment and hence you earn the same during your first year Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've worked out with increase in travelling time and distance alone (I currently do 1.3 miles in 5 mins on my push bike) I would be about another £1,000 a year down on promotion (No Counting the actual cost of buying a car, Ins etc) Besides, I'm in the Job I love doing - Why move, Money Isn't everything, I value my Job satisfaction just as highly Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Pigman 327 Posted September 9, 2008 Author Share Posted September 9, 2008 Why is there not a larger increment......It shows to some degree the lack of respect they have for the Sergeants role........Look how more responsible you have to be....you get the blame off the the Insp and the PC's ! PDR's , discipline (is there any now?) getting in early to prepare briefings......the increase in salary in no way recompenses the effort and extra responsibility but then some say that those that get promoted don't want to work anymore hence become a Sergeant and tell others what to do! Penbwlch 810 Posted October 25, 2008 Share Posted October 25, 2008 Indeed. Those touch pads are dreadful, especially if you have the auto left button select turned on if you pause over a link. Mind you, I don't like laptops at all unless there is a very good reason for one. A lot of people buy them because they think (the salesman has told them) they are the latest fashion. diddly 80 Posted November 10, 2008 Share Posted November 10, 2008 There is more to getting promoted than money. If you're happy in your current rank/position then fine. I have a combined total of 19 years in. My reasons for going for promotion are: 1. With my years of service I have seen several wasters in higher ranks. I know I can do a better job, retain more respect from peers and hopefully do my small bit in gaining respect for whatever rank I hold. 2. Having re-joined as a newer pension holder I have to work to 55/35 years. This means I have 13 1/2 to do so, as the Job has shafted my pension, I will aim for a better one i.e. at least Inspector, rather than PC. 3. I'm getting too old for earlies.lates and particularly nights: I have also done almost all I wanted to do as a PC and feel I can provide added value to "higher" ranks. As a white, hetero, male I do not expect to get further than Ch.Insp. I've just wrapped up TOWBAR and I already have my head in Blackstones for next year's Insp exam in September.
