Hi Benton,<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Welcome to the forum,

You wanted tips for the role plays, The best advice I can give you is that you read your westshire pack cover to cover so that you know it inside out, this will give you a full understanding of what your role is and how to conduct yourself.( This will save valuable time at the assessment)

On the day you will be given written information on what each individual scenario read it carefully make sure you understand what you have read ,do make notes if necessary it does help jot down anything you may need to help you Try to remain calm, easier said than done I know.

Make sure you introduce yourself and be polite and courteous if you not sure what the situation is you can ask the role player to clarify the problem. Show that you are actively listening; make sure you ask plenty of open questions so that you can gather as much information as possible. At the end of the role play try to sum up what action, if any, you are going to take. Always ask the role player if they are happy with what you are doing and is there anything else you can do to help. Take personal responsibility and be sure to explain things, if you can’t help them personally suggest that you discuss the matter with your superiors or other colleagues who can help.

Try not to waffle on just to fill your five minutes make sure you choose your words carefully. short pauses are good it shows that you are thinking about the problem you are faced with and gives the role player time to speak .Most of it is common sense really.

The most important tip I can offer is if you feel one of the role plays has gone badly don’t dwell on it try to recover quickly you can claw back points on the next one. Move on you have three more chances to impress, you never do as badly as what you think.

Speak with confidence even if you don’t feel it, and don’t always expect to resolve the problem as this is not always the case, but a resolve is ultimately what you are aiming for. Some of the role plays are deliberately made to be unresolved, if you get what I mean.

I hope this helps.

All that remains is for me to wish you luck in your assessment. If there is anything else I can help with just give us a shout.

Wanna b

Benton.

Take a timer with you then you will know when you are coming to the end of your five minutes. It must not make a noise though!

Use the first three minutes to ask open questions and try and gather as much info as is possible - listen to the replies the role actor is giving you. In the last two minutes try and develop solutions and coping strategies for the problem.

'Always ask the role player if they are happy with what you are doing and is there anything else you can do to help.' Role actors will not give you any hints in response to questions such as these!

Make sure you know the contents of the Westshire Pack and Seven Core Policing Skills - record them onto a CD/Ipod and play it when in car/bus/walking etc.

Best wishes, hope this helps.

Argos do a timer - it's made by Salter and the product code is 015 0462*. It has a very loud bleep and as these are not allowed, you will need to open the cover (two very small screws - don't lose them) and snip one of the leads to the speaker. Make sure you get the right ones, otherwise you'll cut through the lead to the battery and make it useless.t.gif

Keep the timer somewhere safe when you have finished with it - if you get in the job, it will come in useful for timing yourself on other role acting sessions (do they still do SDEs for probationers student officers?) such as OSPRE Part 2.

*Other timing devices are available from other retail outlets. This is not an endorsement of Argos or Salter. Caveat emptor.

Sounds like you quietly confident. The waiting is the worst bit 2 weeks will feel like 2 months, but stay hopeful, you will have doubt pop into your head and start thinking oh i should have done this or said that, thats the normal.

What an experience isn't it, you feel euphoric just to get through it.

keep my fingers crossed for you, well done  Wink
