Stan Still 1
At the moment, I'm using GriSoft AVG Free software, but this is being withdrawn soon. Due to the ravages of inflation and the lack of O/T, I can't afford to pay for virus protection (OK - I'm too tight to pay for something that is going for nothing, but I thought a political statement might get more attention) Can anyone recommend a FREE anti-virus programme? I've got a few possibilities off Google, but it's nice to know whether they work before I commit myself. Cheers.

Stan Still 1
Er - sorry to point this out, but AVG is the one I'm using now and it is the one that is ending free support, so that tip doesn't help much. The reason the ad appears is because the site is linked to Google Ads. This nifty piece of kit "reads" the contents of the page and automatically puts in adverts that are relevant to the topic under discussion. If you want to check this, put some random phrase into a topic header and see what happens. It may also work on text in a post. Let's try it - PENGUIN SUIT

It is one of the best on the market. Go on, you can afford it.
Stan Still 1
Pen It is good, but there are two reasons for me not putting my hand in my pocket. 1 I don't have a great big commutation sitting in my bank account 2 I really begrudge paying for something that should be free (which is why I've never understood why men go to prostitutes when there is another option available) I've been searching and I'm trying a programme called Avast! Seems OK so far. Does anyone else have this?
Traffic Rat + 287
5J's .. Thanks for the input about the Ad's I just thought it a little ironic you asked about AVG and there's an ad for it.... I hate to say whilst I agree about your sentiments about AVG for Free, I have actually (Don't laugh now) happily paid for mine - used Norton for past 2 years and must say I've never had a problem, and when I first got set up was great as I got alerted to an attack that originated in Central America - I since learned much since those old days, and am going to Pc world to look at what they have tomorrow, but I may be sliding over to McAfee as i'm running a number of their applications and may tidy it all up, but i'll see what the price is like ..... Penbwlch 810
Considering the number of computers in the world that, unknown to their owners, have been taken over by others, I consider that Anti-Virus and Firewall programs are too important to quibble about a small payment. The fantastic quality of service provided by Grisoft (who produce AVG) makes the small payment worthwhile. Save money, by all means, but remember that the reason you are investing in Anti-Virus software is to protect your computer and all the data on it. Would you put a two lever lock on the street door of your home if it was free? Traffic Rat, most observers seem to reckon that the two worst Anti-Virus programs are Norton and McAfee. Have a look at AVG, and it is much cheaper than Norton. The only thing to be prepared for is a lot of heartache when you try uninstalling Norton. The reason it is not liked is because of the way that it is entwined into Windows. This drags the speed of Windows down. It also means that removing it is a nightmare. Be prepared for having to attack it at registry level. The end result is worth it, though. Your computer will be faster without it and the other Anti-Virus programs (except McAfee) do not have the same effect on your computer.
Mickb 0
AVG is not being withdrawn it is being upgraded. Go to the AVG free site and download the windows file and it will install over the current install and you will then see the difference..
belfast-child 0
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html Free and upgrades itself so its always one step ahead!! Maverick22 994
If you want one of the best, NOD32, it's brilliant. Doesn't slow your machine down like many others do, such as Norton. It has never had a virus etc, get through its system, and it is £27.00 a year. I've been running it for two years with no sniff of a problem. Litew8 0
Hi, regarding anti-virus software, this article could be of interest: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2135092,00.asp My anti-virus is from F-Secure (£35.- per year with daily updates for SPAM, Virus, Hackers, Phishing-filters, parental controls and then some - www.fsecure.com). It runs a lot of processes in the background but the scan-engine is excellent. I can recommend this one, although it costs a little more than free... Has so far saved me from one trojan, a lot of SPAM, and one Internet-hacker trying to access my PC whilst I was doing online banking...Litew82007-05-28 13:47:
