oldbillplod 0
Yes they do I have a tomtom, they only update every second so on a shout it is easy to miss your turning until you have a bit of practice and can read the screen in advance. Stan Still 1
I've thought about using my TomTom for this purpose, but there are several issues. 1 I've got TomTom on a PDA, that I don't really want to be carrying about at the sort of jobs that require immediate response and I wouldn't want to leave it in the car either. 2 Our Airwave terminals have got GPS built in, but for some reason it hasn't been turned on yet. Why should I risk my kit/ spend my money for something the job has got but can't be bothered to get working? 3 Once again the Police have bought duff technology, because the GPS in Airwave only updates every 15 seconds (could be wrong, but it is certainly more than 5 seconds) so you will have sailed past the turn before you know it. Apart from that, the GPS only displays on the controller's screen, not in the car, so you have to rely on the controller keeping you updated. 4 West Mids Ambulance Service have had SatNav for years. They can also receive TV on the SatNav screens!!!!! In conclusion, GPS for Police cars is a Very Good Idea, but not one that we should be paying for! mek9 0
West Mid's new generation of Dog Vans has Sat Nav equipment fitted, and it is easy enough to use, once you get used to it. Although you do have to input the desired location, and find the correct one before selecting it. Bear in mind the vans are low powered diesels, so your chances of zooming past junctions are greatly reduced! Apparently there was a system that would link to the control room so they could tell your sat nav where you were supposed to be going, but that was much more expensive. Both are made by a company called VDO or summat, and have to be fitted. I am looking at getting my own Navman or tom tom, so anyone with any experience of either would be appreciated! bluearsedfly 0
We have MDT's in the met which when they work show a map of the surrounding area and a cursor representing your vehicle. It will also highlight your destination, however when it doesn't work you are often shown in places like Leeds and South Africa

Stan Still 1
If these police dogs are so clever, how come no-one ever trained them to read a map?

Stan Still 1
That will make you REALLY popular! I assume they would bark just after you pass the junction? Back to the point - Mek, I have TomTom and it is very useful, but it can't always be relied on at tricky junctions. Used in conjunction with road signs, it usually works. Penbwlch 810
Oh yes. I thrive on being popular. That's why I joined the job. You may find that they don't really bark, they just whine. Oh dear, my Maremma (a bitch) is looking at me in a very strange way.

Stan Still 1
Brian Why would BAF want a map? The train drivers know where they are going and even if they didn't, the rails would give them a bit of a clue. I've never seen a steering wheel on a train though. Brian1545925477 1
Why would BAF want a map? Mr Jays, If you've ever stood in a station for more than 5 minutes wearing a uniform you'll know why. Brian
