What a bizarre case. If this has happened then it is of course completely unacceptable.

However, when I read the article it was hard not to look at it and what had allegedly been said I couldn’t help but think that it is made up. I appreciate it may be due to the language barrier but the direct speech apparently used by the officer doesn’t really sound very plausible. It all sounds a bit strange.

Its ultimately one word v the other.

We shall have to wait and see.

My query is how has the DCI been identified as the perpetrator?

Cleaner who accused officer of race abuse 'uses culture as a weapon', panel told

The hearing is being held at the Empress State Building

A senior detective alleged to have racially abused and threatened a Somalian cleaner has called his accuser a "dangerous" liar who "uses his culture as a weapon", a misconduct panel has heard.

Detective Chief Inspector Glen Lloyd is accused of calling Abdi Yare a n***** and threatening to smash him against a wall after using a toilet which had been shut for cleaning at St Pancras International railway station in London.

The married father-of-three, who has worked at the Met for 26 years, has taken leading roles in both hate crime and diversity in the force, the panel heard on Tuesday.

Giving evidence, the 52-year-old said: "I hate racism, I really despise it, and I have worked tirelessly for over 20 years to combat it, so the irony of me sitting here in this serious situation I find galling.

"I find that all the hard work over 20 years has been thrown in my face. I have never used the N-word. I have never racially abused anyone. It goes against the very core of what I'm about."

The alleged incident happened at around 1am on May 11 last year, when Det Insp Lloyd was off-duty, a misconduct panel at the Empress State Building in south-west London, has heard.

On the night, 6ft 3in Det Insp Lloyd, who weighs 17 stone, had been at a charity event in a sushi restaurant near Liverpool Street station and said he had drunk several glasses of wine and one gin and tonic.

He said: "It was not a night for heavy drinking and I was conscious of my professional demeanour."

Det Insp Lloyd suggested Mr Yare made the "malicious and false allegation" because the cleaner was annoyed he had used urinals which had been closed for cleaning.

He said Mr Yare was "overly officious, rude and abrupt" as he gesticulated and repeatedly told Det Insp Lloyd to leave the toilets, saying he should not be in there.

Outside, a conversation ensued between two passing British Transport Police officers, a station manager and a supervisor trying to figure out the apparent dispute between Det Insp Lloyd and Mr Yare.

Det Insp Lloyd claimed Mr Yare initially kept repeating his annoyance about him using the closed toilet but after several minutes he then "ramped up" his allegations to include racial abuse.

Det Insp Lloyd said: "My jaw dropped. I was totally incredulous - I felt my whole world implode.

"I consider him dangerous because he uses his culture as a weapon. He totally, absolutely, 100 per cent lied."

He said that, in the age of camera phones and recording devices, he would have to be "an absolute numbskull" to racially abuse the cleaner in a public place.

Det Insp Lloyd, of north London, added that he has housed a young black footballer in his home for more than two years and treats him "as my own child".

He went on: "This is my job, my career, and my family on the line here."

Mr Yare, 38, who declined an interpreter, told the hearing on Monday in his second language, English: "He tried to abuse me, told me the word n*****, that's what he said.

"He said 'I will smash you on the wall'. I was panicking at the time. I was scared for my life. He was a very aggressive man."

Mr Yare denied he had "developed an allegation of racist abuse to divert attention away from his own aggressive behaviour".

Lloyd, who has co-authored a book on honour-based violence and has written hate crime policy for the Metropolitan Police, has been placed on restricted duties by Scotland Yard.

The hearing continues.

I cannot help smelling a rat in this allegation. An officer dealing with diversity and hate crimes who has housed a black footballer.  The complaint just does not compute.

A detective chief inspector has been cleared of allegations he racially abused and threatened a Somalian cleaner.

A panel found accusations against Det Chief Insp Glen Lloyd not proven.

The officer had been accused of calling Abdi Yare a n***** and threatening to smash him against a wall after using a toilet which had been shut for cleaning at St Pancras International railway station in London on 11 May 2017.

The independent chairman viewed CCTV of the incident and heard accounts from witnesses – Mr Yare, a member of the public, officers who attended the incident and Det Chief Insp Lloyd - and concluded the case had not been proven.

On Monday the officer suggested his accuser had made the "malicious and false allegation" because the cleaner was annoyed he had used urinals which had been closed for cleaning.

He said Mr Yare was "overly officious, rude and abrupt" as he gesticulated and repeatedly told Det Insp Lloyd to leave the toilets, saying he should not be in there.
