I’m currently on the Isle of Wight and have been admiring their antiquated trains. It struck me though, how is the Island Line policed? It is a National Rail service but completely cut off from the rest of the network. Surely it’s too small and quiet to justify its own policing team? Is there an SLA with Hants who are the territorial force for the island?

I don't think there's an official SLA, it's just like lots of the mainland when county forces deal with crime in and around stations anyway. There's not enough to justify a service up and above that.

Minimum number of patrols each day from Portsmouth officers, and it is part of their defined patrol area. Obviously incident response isn't the greatest there (and where is it outside London for BTP if we're honest) so Hants will most likely be first on scene but any investigations would naturally head over to ourselves.

They did once have 2 PCSOs and 5 PCs parading from a small office at one of the stations (but a satellite of Portsmouth BTP). Ironically none of the officers actually lived on the island.

How do they cross the Solent? Do they get free crossings on the Ryde-Portsmouth  Ferry? does the force get charged per crossing? Or do they have their own boat? (Which I find unlikely!)

Free crossings I believe, as do Hampshire - I'll do some asking!
