Sir John Stevens calls for 'strong decisions' to be made.

Former Met Commissioner Sir John Stevens says historic investigations are taking too many resources from today's police service.

The member of the House of Lords told LBC Radio that "strong decisions" should be taken to call some off.

He said: “The problem is priorities. Some of these historical offences which have taken place are extremely time-consuming and take a lot of resources away.

“Some of them are not [worth the money]. Some very strong decisions have got to be taken.

"Baroness Doreen Lawrence has taken a very brave stance on in saying 'I don't think there's anything more to be discovered here' [in the Stephen Lawrence investigation]. Let's have a little bit more of that."

Police Oracle previously revealed that at least £82 million is being spent on such cases in the UK every year. The full figure is likely to be far higher.

Almost half the cost falls to the Met Police, PSNI, Greater Manchester Police and National Crime Agency.

High profile investigations like the Met's into alleged VIP paedophiles and Wiltshire Police's into the late former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath have been using resources at a time of strained budgets.

Stop using police time and money to investigate the possible criminal actions of someone who is dead you say? How novel.

The question is how far back do you go?

Crime enquiries in terms of murders and rapes and so on - if there's evidence then follow it whatever the time span.

But for police conduct...really?!? I hear there's calls for an inquiry into the miners strike and the policing of it.

Almost all of the officers involved will be retired by now and id wager that every senior officer involved is long retired or dead even.

Shall we investigate the Peterloo massacre? Hold a historic military enquiry.

Serious case review into the Whitechapel murders?

Even then is that not a luxury we currently can't afford? Yes it would be nice to find out who killed Joe Bloggs in the 80s but wouldn't it be better if the officers assigned to that were instead out making sure Emma Smith isn't currently taking a kicking from her bitter ex partner who just broke into her house?
