Adult Volunteers

Recommended Posts

OscarWhiskeyEchoNovember

Hello again, I have had no Internet Access that was decent for a while so I have climbed out of my grave again.

So I have left the VPC (2 years ago *god it has been so long*) and I am looking into potentially becoming an Adult Volunteer however I would like to hear the testimonies of current cadet leaders and what experiences you have had, would you recommend it?

Cheers

Owen

It's hard work. I don't think most cadets realise how much goes on behind the scenes. Hampshire are running an evening where we take over a shopping centre and basically run the cadets through 5 hours of attending incidents and dealing with all the knowledge and skills they've learned to date. We trialled it last year, and are looking at running three this year all around the county. We'll probably have around 120 cadets at each event and probably another 80-100 roleplayers and support staff. As you can imagine, that's a lot of effort.

That sounds like a really good good idea, would be interested in knowing how it pans out.

It really was a lot of fun though. It's a great experience for the cadets as they use Airwave with real controllers on the other end, going to scenarios that are often adapted from real events. It's interesting how cadets sometimes miss their callsign being said on the air and how nervous controllers get when they can't raise cadets, I suppose it's just habit. It's the closest they'll ever get to being a police officer, without actually being one. I've got loads of photos from last year, a selection from Twitter are below:

That really is an excellent idea. We had a competition in GMP with scenarios around our training school however didn't use the radio aspect.

As for the OP, is there any email address on GMP website? If it's staff you're looking to do then that would have to go through HQ for vetting etc first.

That seems strange. Not sure who manages the force account but I'd imagine it would be someone from the Neighbourhoods and Equality team at FHQ. As your signature says, persistence!

I'd probably consider what you are putting in the emails if you're not getting a response (not that I know what you're putting in..!) also CC some of your neighbourhood team in if you know any.
