Specials training

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I couldn't see any previous posts about training with A&S specials but apologise if it has already been covered.

Without specifics that could compromise security, what would a trainee be expected to do during training? Is this something done within the local station? Also do you have a choice about where to serve??

Thanks in advance.

Hi Balding Dad,

The training is held over 10 weekends at HQ (in Portishead). Its normally every other weekend, but there are the odd exceptions.

You can travel each day, or stay in accommodation at HQ (recommended option).

Generally you will do some at home reading before each weekend  (learning the law), and then in class you will lear the practical implementation of what you have learned.

Besides law the course also covers things like PPE, First Aid, Computer Systems, Airwave etc. The idea being that when you attest at the end of the course, you know enough to be on district with a tutor. It's on district that your going to really learn what your doing!

Re choosing where you serve, you let us know where you want to go, and we try and accommodate it ( and normally do manage), but sometimes resourcing needs mean we have to put you somewhere close to where you want to go. Once you have finished your tutorship and are signed off for solo patrol, its much easier to place you where you want to be.

That is really useful thank you. It sounds intensive but really interesting. I guess it would as I'm interested in joining.

Thank you.
