Dash Cam

Hi Folks,

After having some complete eejit reverse into my shiny new car yesterday, I'm thinking of getting a dash cam for my car. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm not looking to spend lots of money, probably just over £100. I'm not so worried about it having GPS but the motion sensor activation would be handy (if someone hits the car and I'm not in it, for example).

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Funny you should link that one @IanW - that's the one I was looking at on Amazon!

I've got one of these

Shop around, got mine for about 27 pounds on ebay.

Really impressed with it for the money :)

Edit, check out techmoan on YouTube, enough reviews of different cameras to drive you insane!

Thanks for the suggestions gang. I'm going to give the Transcend DrivePro 200 a try and see if that does the job. I might look to get another one in the future for the rear window so will keep those suggestions in mind!

If it doesn't have GPS then don't bother, most of the benefit is the ability to show where and when the incident happened which is gained from the GPS data which in turn gives a map overlay.  It then gives your speed (GPS version anyway).

Avoid those with curvature of the picture, for a few pounds more the picture quality improves so likelihood of seeing index plates also improves. When you get one, always have it set to the highest resolution, it may fill the memory card and over write quicker, but when the prang you want recorded has a hazy image at a time when you actually want the best quality available. that is when you'll regret the shortcut.

And think about the reason your buying it - its so that when that expensive prang does happen, that you can claim your losses easier.  If you are the victim with serious injuries, you want to be thinking of the ease of getting a high value claim through and not wishing you had spent £23 more on a slightly better camera that may, and I only say May help you in the future.  The flip side is that if you are the errant driver, it will also assist in a swifter prosecution / claim against you.

Ok, so well out of your stated budget, but last year I bought a Roadhawk HD dashcam. Excellent bit of kit with GPS etc but at £240, you get what you pay for. I spend a large portion of my working day on the road. Many of the HGV's I see also use Roadhawk cams. Can't recommend it enough.

Yep, I've spent a lot of time looking at various in car video stuff and many you can see things like road signs but as you get closer it is often difficult / impossible to read what they say and the same goes for No plates.  About the only thing none of them seem to have perfected yet is to either dispose of the cable or to have it easily and discreetly used so as to move it from vehicle to vehicle which is what happens in the typical family circs.  I suppose the end result could be to use something like a GoPro but not sure if that has the GPS - although it seems to do everything else as a rechargable item!!

I did consider a GoPro to start off with but it was a bit more than I needed really! I want to get the cabling sorted in the car so that it's hardwired in rather than using the 12V socket but first test today was good. I'll see if I can upload one of the clips from my trip to the supermarket so folks can see the quality etc.

GoPros lack all the features that you need in a dashcam, like recording as soon as it has power, chunking and looping the datafiles and GPS.

As Burnsy says, GoPro's aren't designed for almost continual usage, and they're a nice easy valuable target for thieves, I've been running an E-Prance Mini 0803 (off Amazon) for almost 12 months now and it hasn't skipped a beat! My new car is due in the next week or two so shall be getting a hardwire kit to transfer it over. It does 1080p, GPS and is nice and small behind the rear view mirror that it can't be seen from the drivers seat! Bargain at £70!

  • 9 months later...

I've been considering getting one also... Reckon it's worth having a rear cameras as well as the front?

My dash cam has motion sensing and infra red so I put mine in the garden last night to see what it would capture if anything, I'm looking forward to getting home and downloading the footage :)
