  1. I'm a Welfare Officer employed by the charity 'The Defence Medical Welfare Service' working on a pilot project delivering welfare support to Police Officers, Staff, Specials and their immediate family members in Avon and Somerset Constabulary. I'm currently supporting a Special Constable who suffered an injury on duty that may require surgery. I'm aware of the Special Constable Group Insurance Scheme, which was previously administerd by NPIA then transferred to the Home Office. I'm trying to obtain the policy summary and detailed t&cs for this cover but have had no response to date, either from the Home Office or the College of Policing. My enquiry was sent to 'Special Constabulary Enquries' and 'Special Team' mailboxes respectively and we are being passed from pillar to post by phone. Can anyone assist with this information or a named point of contact? I'm also trying to establish whether NPIA 04/2010 circular 'Ex gratia payment for Special Constables for injury or illness' is still current or whether there has since been an updated or revised version? Many thanks in advance.
  2. Its not entirely uncommon to find a driver is using their vehicle for business purposes and then to find they do not have the corresponding cover on their insurance. The end result being they are driving without insurance - vehicle seized, driver prosecuted and disqualified. For this topic we assume the person is not self employed. So, the scenario question is, a driver is found to be driving without insurance for business purposes, do or should further enquiries be made with the employer to ascertain that the driver was actually driving for business and if so, could, would or should the employer be dealt with for an associated offence? Perhaps even, does the employer's overarching fleet insurance cover this driver. After all, the driver is supposedly acting for or in the course of the employer's business. There are lots of permutations but as a starter: Smith is an employee of Potter-Jones Printers Ltd. During the day, Smith lets it be known that after office hours s/he will be travelling to Birmingham. The print manager hears this and asks Smith if s/he would make a slight detour and deliver 5 boxes of printed material to a client and in doing so, the company will pay a mileage allowance equivalent to 15 pence per mile to the client's address and back. Alas Smith gets stopped by police enroute, Smith produces a car insurance certificate which shows cover for the usual social, domestic & pleasure and commuting. All the elements appear to be present for Smith to be prosecuted for driving without insurance. So how often, if at all, would enquiries be made of the employer in this or any other driving for business without insurance incidents.
  3. Driving Other Vehicles

Afternoon all, Just a quick one. I note from shows such as Traffic Cops and Police Interceptors that if a civilian vehicle needs to be moved the officers are able to get inside and move it under Police Insurance. Is this limited to advanced police drivers or can any officer providing they have a driving entitlement through the police force? Thanks in advance. XA84
  4. Phone Insurance

Hi All, Just wondering who has phone insurance and if anyone can recommend any providers? Currently I'm paying £15 p/m on an iPhone 6 with £60 excess for a claim. The good thing about my current provider is that if I make a claim I will be given a replacement on the next working day. However I still believe it's quite expensive for phone insurance.
  5. Before questions are asked I have no mods on my car this is for theoretical you stop a car and they tell you they have not declared X. So you stop a car, or know someone who has modified their car, added a turbo, changed the wheels And exhaust but haven't declared it to insurers as it would cost too much. Are they committing an offence (S165 RTA?), Or is their insurance likely to be voided ? Doing public order a lot I see people "selling" lifts to random people every week, assuming they're not insured as a taxi, is there anything we can do about this ?
  6. Hi, I have life insurance, where as we all know premium is affected by anything and everything. Now when I join police as a SC, I will have additional occupation, which is more dangerous than what I do for living (paid job). Has anyone got experience in this subject? Does being special count as occupation? Is it likely that my life insurance premium will go up? What other things will have to be updated? I assume car insurance for private business. Or maybe volunteering is classified as pleasure.
  7. Car MOT

Afternoon folks, My friends buying a car at the weekend but it doesn't currently have a in date MOT, thus no insurance or road tax. He will be picking it up and get it into a MOT test centre the day he picks it up, is he covered to drive it to the test centre for its MOT As long as it's booked in?

  9. Hi all, I've got to go to court next week in relation to someone I reported for driving without insurance. He's pleaded guilty but is claiming special reasons why he shouldn't be given the relevant penalty points (he's subject to New Drivers Act 1995) - I've been called as a prosecution witness, does anyone know what sort of stuff I'll be asked? Thanks very much, F&V
  10. I thought this was interesting... Apparently a motorists insurance premium is lightly to increase after a no fault collision at a higher rate than after a fault collision When inquiring about this, apparently statistics back up the insurance companies. A driver who is at fault in a collision is more lightly to improve driving, therefore less lightly to be involved in another collision. Whereas a driver who is not at fault can believe his driving is good and not in need of improvement, and more lightly to be involved in another collision.
