For private individuals it is the responsibility of the insurance provider to get details of a policy or changes on MID within 7 days of the effective date. For company vehicles it is the responsibility of the policy holder to ensure that their company vehicle details are provided for MID. To find out more about this please contact your insurance provider. Click HERE to see if your car is listed on the Motor Insurance Database

Taking drivers keys?

Just wondering if some experienced traffic cops could offer some advice or best practice. Where do you stand when you stop a vehicle for a routine check and the driver cooperates but refuses to lower the window more than 2 inches and refuses to turn the engine off? I encountered this recently and had never been in that situation before. It was only afterwards I considered I could have asked for a specimen on breath. However, is there anything stopping the driver from saying they will take the test sat in their car with the engine still on and the window down only enough for the officer to administer this test?

Wow, the recent change of penalty for a new Section 2C offence of causing serious injury and driving without due care and attention to have 2yrs imprisonment max penalty. With the threshold of serious injury being so low, (broken arm for example) and threshold for DWC being so low, how do you think it will unfold - how many cases may now change from NFA to prosecute and now require further investigation before a decision is made!

Road legal LED brake, indicators and reverse lights

Last year my car was struck by a bus, apparently they couldn't see me. I want to change this by making essential modifications. Though I wish to do this legally. I get mixed opinions and answers everywhere, Halfords are fairly confident that they know it all. So I put it to you, can you definitively confirm putting in LED's for Brake, indicators and reverse are still road legal? LED have been proven to be more noticeable and responsive. So much so they are manufactured in all new cars. I'm not talking cheap Chinese ones, more autobeam performance style. I appreciate LED headlights and side lights are yet to be road legal, though I wonder if break, indicators and…

Hi all, I've just found out that I'm going to be going to RPU in the future (waiting for a date to go). Can anyone recommend any books etc that will be worth getting to assist with my time on there. I was going to get the Blackstones one but any others would be great. Thanks.

3d / domed registration / number plates

Afternoon all. Thoughts on gel numberplates please? Specifically gel on acrylic - not metal pressed plates (which I believe would fail BD145d if nothing else for the bend test requirements, but that's another topic). An example of the plates, listed as 'road legal' is here: https://www.utopiaplates.co.uk/ From the side, those advertised as '4d' with the high stencil are extremely difficult to read as one letter obscures the next. I've scoured the law and standards to the best of my ability, but cannot find anything specific about it. Reference is made to 'characters on a numberplate can be 3d' (https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/rules-number-plate…

H Rules and Highway Code
by BlueBob +- 1 follower

There is lots of media about the new H Rules or Hierarchy of road users and the new Highway Code. There are a couple of interesting bits - drivers are now meant to give way at pedestrian crossing to pedestrians who are waiting to cross rather than are crossing! Not sure if there is accompanying legislation on that bit Also, the diagrams seem to support the idea that a car intending to turn right, must give way to a bed/cyclist etc that may be passing on the offside and going straight ahead. I wonder how this might change the dealing with the typical Section 3 due care scenario of 'car' turning right whilst being overtaken by motor/pedal cyclist, when it was of…

As the topic title suggests….. What is your RPU operating model and what shift pattern do you work? For example we operate as a standalone “division” so to speak that has number of bases across the county that are aligned to the 5 response teams and work a 6 on 4 off pattern.

Was an LGV driver now a PC - what next
by BlueBob +- 4 replies

There are some who were an LGV driver in a previous life and have since joined the police, and then onto road policing. Of those who were LGV drivers, and the apparent rapid change of wages for an LGV driver, thought I'd raise a post and see if any ex-LGV drivers have had thoughts of moving back or staying in the job?

Warwickshire’s Special Constabulary receive new dedicated roads policing car thanks to Police and Crime Commissioner grant Warwickshire’s Special Constabulary now have their own dedicated roads policing car thanks to a £35k grant from Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Seccombe’s Road Safety Fund. Special Constables are volunteers who work across a variety of policing teams, and when fully trained can do everything that a regular police officer does, including roads policing. The new car is a fully liveried police car, equipped with operational equipment including ANPR, breath test kit, tow bar, variable message system, cones, signage, auxiliary lighting a…

Plain clothed officers in pursuits
by Intel_Skipper *- 2 followers

The question has come up in my force around plain clothed officers stopping vehicles and then pursuing them if they FTS. The RTA states that a constable in uniform can stop a vehicle on a road however "uniform" is not defined under the act and the is little case law around this (which I suspect means that its not often challenged). R v Wallwork V Giles 1970 the court ruled that a constable not wearing a hat was in uniform and stated that there was a need to be easily identifiable as a constable. The debate would be about when is an officer clearly identifiable? Would a police issued stab vest with "POLICE" written all over it count? There would clearly be a distincti…
