Someone at work was expressing frustration as their phone was stolen, gave the police the location from Find My iPhone only to be told there is nothing the force can do. I can see it from both sides, as knowing where it is but not really being able to do anything about it must be very annoying. But GPS is not perfect. I record my runs and when I look at them on the map, the GPS sometimes claims that I have run straight through a row of houses parallel to the street rather than the street itself! So while it's good enough for directions and having a rough idea what routes you've taken, it's probably not reliable enough to identify a specific property if there are lots of o…

Do forces in the UK buy data sets from Facebook and other social media companies? I've been reading about American forces doing this and it's rather interesting. Now I am not very familiar with their laws, and I know it's a different situation as there's lots more individual police forces with different authorities. But what I understand to be the case is that when an American force wants to compel Facebook to release certain information they often require a subpoena. Some forces, if they can't get a subpoena granted, are instead just buying the data from the many marketing companies Facebook sell it too. That seems a bit like 'cheating' to me, legal but not really in the…

Field Impairment Training for police officers in the UK, often referred to as FIT testing, is a program designed to equip officers with the knowledge and skills to detect impairment in individuals suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The training is essential for ensuring road safety and enforcing the law. The specifics of FIT training may evolve over time, but currently, here are some of the key components typically involved: Recognition of Impairment: Police officers are trained to recognize signs of impairment in drivers, which may include slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, the smell of alcohol or drugs, unsteady movemen…

Trying to Understand S32 PACE
by Maverick27 *- 1 follower

Hi all. I've been a little confused on the wording of S32 PACE in regards to searching upon arrest. It states that a constable must have reasonable grounds to believe he will find DIE (items relating to danger, evidence or escape), but what if the constable doesn't have belief (or he only suspects)? I know that a person will have to be searched at the station under S54, but does S32 suggest that you, as a constable, can't always search if you don't have the grounds to do so?

Code of Ethics - Updated 2024

Code of Ethics - January 2024 The ethical policing principles are a series of guiding statements that should be used to help people in policing do the right things, in the right way, for the right reasons. Everyone in policing routinely makes important decisions. We make these decisions because it is our duty to uphold the law, prevent crime and disorder, protect and reassure communities, investigate crime and bring offenders to justice. Carrying out these duties can be physically, mentally and emotionally demanding. Our decisions can raise complex ethical issues because they affect other …

The National Security Act 2023

Have any forces issued guidance on the National Security Act yet? @Ether + you were talking about this one a while ago. I am trying to study and understand the legislation to see if it presents any legal obstacles for auditing, but it's rather challenging so would appreciate a helping hand. According to the act you commit an offence if you 'inspect' a prohibited place for a purpose that you know or ought to know is prejudicial to the safety or interests of the UK, and 'inspect' includes taking photos and filming so that would cover auditing. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2023/32/enacted#section-7-1 is where they define a prohibited place. Do police stations fall in…

Arresting an On-Call doctor? 1 2

I was wondering what the protocol is when arresting someone who is on call or on standby to deal with an emergency and their absence could put lives at risk. I know this is what voluntary attendances are for but if that wasn't possible and for some reason you absolutely had to arrest rather than VA, what happens? Are they taken to a local station and their phone kept on, and if there is an emergency they get temporarily released and escorted to the emergency under police guard or something like that?

Hi all, off the bat, I’m not a police officer, so feel a bit of a fraud being on here. That being said, I have some very specific questions and this forum seems like the best place to get an answer. There has recently been a huge rise In the number of American style ‘audit’ videos on YouTube, carried out in the uk, for those that don’t know what these are, it is supposed to be an honest attempt to raise awareness of good and bad police practices, however as they can be carried out by anybody, they often end up being a slagging match between the two parties, showing police officers in a bad light, and wasting their precious time. There are very few that accomplish what the…

A lot of powers available to police seem to depend on first getting the authority of a more senior officer, like an Inspector or a Superintendent. How involved does the senior officer actually get in these cases? Do they just sign off on it as a formality, trusting that the officer seeking the authority has got it right? Or do they get properly involved in the case and spend time reading about it before deciding whether to sign?

I recently got a speeding ticket in Dallas by mail, 25 days after returning a rental car. Surprisingly, the ticket claims I was going 88 in an 80 kph zone (!), even though I wasn't pulled over. They included a photo of the rental car's licence plate as proof. I'm not sure what would happen if I chose not to pay the fine.

Police vetting process
by usy *- 2 replies

Have recently accepted an offer for the role of applications engineer with my local police service. Had an interview mid November and was informed I was accepted a few days later. I have completed all forms including medical, sickness absence history and also vetting. I received an email on 1st December to say that my vetting application was received. Just wondering how long do these things normally take? I didn't have much to declare on my vetting apart from 3 points I received from speeding 9 years ago, even though the points have expired I thought its better to be honest.
